Coca-Cola Freestyle

The Once-in-a-Generation Fountain Machine

Our team figured out how users can select from 120 different flavors within one interface all within a few simple touches. It wasn’t easy since nobody had done it before. For what is today an icon of machines, I led the user experience and visual design development for the original Freestyle machine and its product packaging. Working in total secrecy for nearly a year, we connected the user flow, as well as design all the buttons for the various combinations of drink that anyone could desire. We teamed up with Dean Kamen's company, DEKA, who developed the pour distribution technology and together we built this once-in-a-lifetime consumer experience.

The Button Challenge
Developed the unique button design for all brands of the original Freestyle Machine. Each button went through hours of design explorations to get the right combination of coloring and iconography to be both on brand and for clear decision making.

Interaction Models
Interaction paradigms were needed for all possible scenarios of drink choices. Goal was to have every possible pour within three touches.

Branded Screens
We designed each screen to have a unique brand experience so that users would be washed with color of the brand.
